Bye-bye Porsche?
Porsche’s manager for energy and the environment, Herbert Ampferer, has told Automotive New Europe that it is impossible for the company to meet the goals that the European Commission is targeting for carbon dioxide reduction.
Although the EC is proposing a 130 g/km CO2 fleet average, the paper says Porsche will have to cut average CO2 emissions from its new cars to 144 g/km from 242g/km, or face progressive fines of up to €95 per gram over the limit. If the EU approves the Commission’s proposals, Porsche executives say every Cayenne S premium SUV sold in 2015 and beyond would carry a fine of €9,702.
Then again, if you are in the market for a Porsche, perhaps a few hundred dollars extra don’t matter.

Politicians in the EU are nothing but overpaid populists riding the climate train..
By 2015 we’re much closer to peak oil where oil prices skyrocket and the cost for driving big SUVs goes up either way. There’s no need for stupid climate fines..I guess the fat cat-commisioners didn’t think of that.. or did they deliberately chose to ignore it??
Sure, driving big SUVs doesn’t help to prevent the depletion of the world’s oil reserves but neither does air travelling, wearing polyester clothes, using plastics, sending post cards, eating food…shortly: simply existing in the modern world!
We should all get our thinking caps on to find the solution to this problem instead of using silly rethorics aimed at SUV owners. In fact, it’s nothing but populism, poor against the rich, etc.. Still, motor traffic only makes up for 10% of the total co2 emissions.. Now how much of that 10% is explicit SUV fumes…?
Btw, great blog Maggie!
