To eat or not to eat?

Your life is at steak.

Your life is at steak.

Remember Mr Pachauri? He wanted us to stop eating red meat to save the earth. Meat comes from cows that burp methane. Methane is making the world bake. So meat is bad for the climate.

But now, a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine suggests another solution to the global warming problem. According to the study results, high intakes of red meat may increase the risk of mortality. Thus, red meat can cause early death. And remember, one human less is one human carbon footprint less.

So now, we just need to do some math. What’s better for the planet? To eat methane-burping cows and die prematurely, or to live long enough to make up for all that lost methane by higher CO2-emissions? Any volunteers?

If there were no cows to eat the grass, the grass would simply decompose by itself and produce the same amounts of methane and CO2. Cows at worst are carbon neutral. As they simply eat grass that is produced by photosynthesis and the extraction of carbon from the atmosphere (Even man made nitrogen based fertilisers are extracted from the air using the Haber process). It might be a different story if cows ate coal and drank oil, but they don’t.

The more fertilizer the more grass, the more grass, the more ‘deadly’ CO2 is removed from the atmosphere, the more cows can eat, and the more cows we can eat.

Yes, you can have your steak and eat it.

But let me put forward another theory about why Mr Pachauri doesn’t want us to eat beef, The sacred cow theory. Mr. Rajendra Pachauri, of the IPCC, is a Hindu. The cow is sacred to most Hindus. There are even anti-slaughter laws in many indian states.

Maybe Mr. Pachuari, would like us to stop eating red meat, because he’d really like us to stop eating his sacred cows.

Re: Killian comment. Put another way, some 25% of the world’s cattle are reportedly located in India, and they have no plans to eliminate their emissions there. You left out a 3rd alternative: dissolution of the IPCC would automatically cut AGW by 50% or more. With that, I’m going back to my 2 McD cheeseburgers.
