Earth Hour is a publicity stunt and may actually increase fuel use in power stations.
I worked as an analytical chemist from 1976 till ‘89 in the Australian coal industry. In ‘76 I measured 0.0320% CO2 in the air averaged over a few days, by 1989 it was 0.0345%. There is a water-tight physical mechanuism for CO2 absorbing long wavelength infra-red, the exact kind emitted by warmed water and rock.
Now either global average / mean temperatures are increasing or they are not. Evidence, to the best of my knowlege is that they are. I have been aware of the possibility of a connection for 30 years.
I have no faith in Earth Hour, nor much in the people behind it., but even less in economists or business types who say global warming is a fraud.
It’s the myth of Man made Global Warming that I find a fraud. After the Second World War any unusual weather ‘event’ was usually attributed to the ‘Atom’. Then we had an approaching ‘Ice Age’. The very same scientists that were predicting that unfounded icy future can be found amongst those prostletizing Global Warming.
Stop wasting time and money on atmospheric levels of CO2, which after all is not a poison [unless the Venutian atmosphere is considered] and plants would die without it, as would we.
OK, you claim there’s probably no global warming. But if it’s true that the icebergs are melting, is it possible (like in that movie starring Dennis Quaid) that cold water changes the flow of the Gulf Stream and so create global cooling?
DianaK: In the first place, Diana, climate is never stable. It is always warming or cooling. The earth has warmed 0,74 degrees C in the 20th century, but there hasn’t been any additional warming so far since 2000 (or 1995 to be exact).
The scenario you describe is considered by the scientists as highly unlikely. So probably no need to worry.
James the farmer was in the fertilised egg business.
He had several hundred young layers (hens), called ‘pullets’ and eight or ten roosters, whose job was to fertilise the eggs.
The farmer kept records and any rooster that didn’t perform went into the soup pot and was replaced.
That took an awful lot of his time so he bought a set of tiny bells and attached them to his roosters. Each bell had a different tone so James could tell from a distance, which rooster was performing. Now he could sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report simply by listening to the bells.
The farmer’s favourite rooster was old Albert, and a very fine specimen he was too. But on this particular morning James noticed old Albert’s bell hadn’t rung at all! James went to investigate. The other roosters were chasing pullets, bells-a-ringing. The pullets, hearing the roosters coming, would run for cover.
But to farmer James’ amazement, Albert had his bell in his beak, so it couldn’t ring. He’d sneak up on a pullet, do his job and walk on to the next one.
James was so proud of Albert, he entered him in the Polokwane Country Fair and Albert became an overnight sensation among the judges. The result was the judges not only awarded Albert the No Bell Piece Prize but they also awarded him the Pullet Surprise as well.
Clearly Albert was a politician in the making: Who else but a politician could figure out how to win two of the most highly coveted awards on our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the populace and screwing them when they weren’t paying attention.
